A direct and special call to our comrades Anarchists and Libertarians Arabic-speaking

No to State, No to war. Yes for self-administration and the Social revolution

For years and years we, anarchists and libertarian in Iraqi “Kurdistan”, Europe and other countries all our publicities and our slogan have been about Yes for self-administration in everywhere and for all the communities , but No to State.

We raised our voice against the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and its very recent scenario of referendum on “independent Kurdish State”. We are very sure the other anarchists among Arab, Turkish, Assyrian and others had the same attitude. We also believe the same attitude from our anarchist comrades throughout the world to say no to State, authority, nationalism and to be against the nationalist and against pro-fascist war.

Iraqi “Kurdistan” has been going through a very difficult time since Oct 2015. The wages of public sector employees have been reduced to less than a half, the number of unemployment has increased sharply, the price of everything has gone up, business and the government services have dramatically been cut off. This all happened in addition to the war with Isis and disputes between (KRG) and the central government over the budget and the disputed lands and city like Kirkuk and the others.

So many strikes, demonstrations and boycotting work during this couple of years took place. Some of them lasted for few weeks even months. KRG instead of resolving all these problems tried to divert the attention of people from the real problems by announcing in July the referendum of independent Kurdistan, state of Kurdistan, on 25th of Sep.

Masoud Barzani the head of KRG set up the day of referendum without consulting Iraqi, neighbourhood countries, US and European countries. Once he called for referendum, all of them rejected it and told him that he will not get any support.

After the referendum of 25th of September Iraq, Iran and Turkey governments came together against it and threaten KRG with economic sanction. Iraqi government asked KRG to withdraw the decisions of the referendum and get back to the Iraqi constitution in taking any decision. Haider al-Abadi , the Prime Minster of Iraq gave Barzani warning that if he does not back down, the Iraqi government will take over control of Kirkuk province’s oil wells that are at the moment under the control of KRG.

Three days ago the Iraqi government sent a huge numbers of Police, military and Hishdi Shaibe [ the Siha paramilitary group] with various of heavy weapons to take positions on the city’s approaches.

The civil war now very imminent between Peshmarga, KRG forces, and the above forces of central government.

We are asking for support and solidarity from our comrades anarchists to protest, making a statement against this war, show their anger against the war and solidarity to Iraqi people.

We are anti State because we are against the current political system. We are anti-political party and anti-authoritarian ideology from left to the right, because we are anti class superiority, and anti-private ownership and exploitation of the labour. All the wars in history happened due to protecting class superiority, private ownership and labour exploitation.

We are against war, weapons and hatters between the different cultures and between different ethnic minorities. War in general produces death and slavery. The outcome of any war does not support starting the social revolution, in fact it damages and weakening the revolution climate. In the meantime, war opening a very big market for selling/ buying weapons and destroying the environment. War makes the poor people poorer and class superiority lasts longer.

While we are against war, we are very much in favour of people self-administration wherever they are living communally and working collectively. We are also aware wherever the state exist there is no freedom, wherever political party is, there is no self-thinking and individual independency. Wherever the businessmen and money are, there are slavery wages and exploited people.

In Iraqi “Kurdistan” there has been a strong authority for the last 26 years, there has been the bourgeois in power. For the last 26 years people deprived from the real freedom and from making the decision by themselves. For the long time the ruler has done very little for the people in “Kurdistan” in term of providing services. They encouraged people to move from the rural area to the towns and cities, making so many business contracts with the foreign oil company and corporations for their own profit, sold all the public lands and many more. In short “Kurdistan” became the home of many multinational companies, the financial institutions and the spies network of the neighbourhood countries and others. Since then they acted like a proper state in whatever they wanted to do. So why should we expect different when they set up their own “independent state” and think it will be better than what the people have it now?

We ask all our anarchist comrades to support and have solidarity with us to prevent this war. It is true that your opposition to the military and nationalist war in Iraq, if happens, may not as effective as our opposition, however, your solidarity will be crucial and greatly appreciated.

We again are calling our whole comrade anarchists especially Arab, Persian, Turkish and Assyrian speakers to raise their voices and act to stop this viscous war that is not in the interest of working class and poor people in Iraq and “Kurdistan”. Being silent and not be serious about it, is directly or indirectly serves the politicians, the big corporations and the capitalist system. We therefore have no choice but fighting back the system, its action and its war. We also expect the other anarchists wherever they are to stand with us, firm and to support the children, elderly and the disable people in Iraq.

Beleuchtet werden erstens historische Eckpunkte der Entwicklung von Arbeitsmigration und Asylmigration angesichts der ökonomischen Entwicklungen in der Schweiz/Europa. Und zweitens stellen wir uns die Frage in welchen Phasen der Rassismus und die Xenophobie besonders beackert wurden, um die Klasse zu spalten und die Ausbeutung der ausländischen Arbeitskräfte zu legitimieren.

Remembering this day Sept.21, one of the horrific and tragic moment happened in the history of the Philippines. Martial Law was declared by President Marcos to suppress and repress most of the people. Rampant violence, forced disappearance, arrest, killings and torture experienced by dissidents and common people who are criticizing the authoritarian regime at that time.

Today, Duterte’s administration was also following the path for being a totalitarian and a fascist by putting people’s lives on his own hands defying constitutional and human rights. Declaring Martial Law in Mindanao and instigating War on Drugs policy by killings thousands of poor people. This regime are misleading the people by their fake news by putting their effort on drug related issue to stop criminality and not confronting the real problem of the society, that social injustice like poverty, no job opportunity, no social welfare, forced displacement are the main cause and this injustices are already violence.

As our attempt to express our sentiments against this atrocity. We planned to gather in Luneta Park to have a picnic, Food Not Bombs mass feeding, Really Free Market, mobile library, culture jamming, Radyo Kalye and many more. More than 40 participants show their support engaging ourselves with the homeless community who sleep and stay in the park. Homelessness are one of the awful problem happening in the Philippines and no government since before could make a solution.

“Ang Pekeng Balita ay Karahasan”

Uso ang peke. Pekeng pera, pekeng produkto, pekeng kwento, pekeng buhok, pekeng droga at pekeng balita. Hindi ko lang alam kung may Peking duck.

Marahil ay walang ibang layon ang pamemeke kundi manloko. Bakit? Dahil ikinukubli nito ang totoo. Hindi makikita ng ibang tao ang tunay kalagayan dahil ito ay natabunan ng nagpapanggap na katotohanan. Maaring nakabili ka ng murang pekeng produkto, kung ang hanap mo ay branded ikaw ay naloko. Ngunit kung sadya namang bumili nito ang korporasyon ang nagoyo. Ang paggamit ng pekeng buhok ay isa ring porma ng panlalansi, kung wala mang layon na masamang intensyon naikubli ang katotohanan, ang kasalatan sa buhok ay natatabunan.

Ang magpakalat ng pekeng balita at istorya ay likas na masama. Ito ay may pagtatangka na itago, pagtakpan o iligaw ang mga tao sa tunay na kalagayan para protektahan ang interes, posisyon o layunin ng isa o grupo ng mga tao.

Ang pamemeke ng tunay na kalagayan ay mapaminsala. Iyong nakakaligtaan na ang tunay na kalagayan ay ang kahirapan at kagutuman ng karamihan. Nagaganap ito dahil may iilang tao lang ang may hawak at kontrol sa mga yaman ng lipunan. Ang mga lupain, ari-arian at mga pasilidad na makakalikha ng ating mga batayang pangangailangan ay kontrolado ng iillan dahil sa kanilang mga posisyon at impluwensya sa pamahalaan.

Binentahan ang mga tao ng pekeng riyalidad. Sa pekeng riyalidad na ito nakatuon ang atensyon at nagiging bulag sa mahalagang usapin na may direktang kinalaman sa mismong buhay natin. Halimbawa, bakit hindi tayo nagagalit sa napakababa na batayang sweldo ng manggagawa? Habang hindi mapigilan ang pagtaas ng presyo ng mga batayang bilihin at serbisyo.

Laganap ang pagnanakaw sa pamahalaan, sa halip na mapunta ang salapi sa mga serbisyong panlipunan ito  ay isinisilid sa bulsa ng iilan. Makakarinig tayo ng pagtangis subalit sa kabuuan ay business as usal ang mga kawatan.

Sa tuwina’y bukam-bibig ang proteksyon ng kalikasan ngunit patuloy ang pagmimina, pagputol ng mga kahoy, pagbubuga ng carbon emission at pagkakalat ng basura at lason sa kapaligiran.

Bakit hindi tayo nag-aalburuto sa daan libong tao at pamilyang walang tahanan na nakakalat sa mga lansangan? Ang mga bata, matatanda o kababaiahan may kapansan na naghihingi ng awa, sa halip mag-abot ng suporta, mas mabilis pang sisihin sila sa kanilang katamaran at kabobohan. Ating nakakalimutan na ang kawalan ng marami sa atin ay dulot ng kontrol ng iilan lang.

Walang pag lagyan sa kasaganahan ang mga lider at pulitiko ng mga partido, korporasyon at simbahan habang malawak na bilang ng tao ay nag-aagawan sa mumo at tira-tira ng mga de-prebelehiyong iilan.

Hindi mo na pinapansin ang mga iyan dahil ang atensyon mo ay nasa PEKENG BALITA. Natutuwa ka bang makita na ang kapwa mo mahirap ay pinatay dahil sa akusasyon pa lang? Sabihin na nating adik nga siya o nagbebenta ng tingi-tinging shabu, ito kaya ay sapat na batayan upang siya ay kitlin?

Totoong may mga karahasan kaugnay sa illegal na droga; maaring ito ay sikolohikal na epekto o onsehan sa bentahan hindi ito dapat na pagtakpan. Marapat lang na masugpo ang ganitong mga karahasan. Ngunit iyo ding pag-isipan; gaano kaya karami ang buhay na nasayang dahil sa digmaan sa pagitan ng mga pulahan at pamahalaan? May ideya ka kaya sa bilang ng mga napatay dahil sa tunggalian ng mga sundalo at mga rebeldeng muslim? Nakita mo rin kaya na sa simpleng alak lang ay napakarmi na ring insidente ng patayan?

Dahil sa pekeng balita, hindi mo na alintana ang higit na seryosong usapin. Hindi mo na napagtuunan ng atensyon ang mga isyung may malalim na pinsala sa ating lipunan katulad ng kagutuman, kahirapan, diskriminasyon at pagkasira ng kalikasan.

Sa halip ay nalilibang ka sa mga nakasalansan na bangkay sa paniniwalang ang pagiging sangkot sa droga ay higit na masama kaysa pagpatay, pandarambong sa kaban ng bayan, kawalan ng mga disenteng pabahay, kawalan ng lupang sakahin, patuloy na digmaan at pagkawasak ng kalikasan.

 

Samantala, Septyembre 21 ay ika- 45th na taong deklarasayon ng martial law. WALANG DAPAT IPAGDIWANG.

Ang atin ay pag-alaala sa MALAWAKANG KARAHASAN ng Gobyerno laban sa mga tao.

Si Marcos sampu ng kanyang mga cronies ay bangag sa kapayangrihan at hayok sa yaman.

PANANAKIT, PANANAKOT, PAGPATAY, PAMIMILIT ang kanilang gamit.

NANGAMKAM, NAGNAKAW, NANDAYA, NG TORTURE, NANGIDNAP, AT PUMATAY NG LIBO. Ilan ito sa mga dapat nating maala-ala upang makaiwas sa mga katulad na sakuna.

Sa TOTOO, hati ang maraming tao. Ito naman kasi ang gusto ng mga pulitiko. Ang magbakod at maghiwalay sa mga tao. Kaaway ang hindi kapanalig sa pulitika. Ang DEMOKRASYA ay NAKAKATAWA, ang oposisyon kinikilala pero ang layon ay lupigin ang hindi katulad. Sa pagturing na ang sarili at kinabibilangang grupo o partido ay higit na superyor kontra sa iba. Ikaw ay may “matalas na linya” habang ang iba ay “totoong sosyalista”. Sila naman ang may “totoong pananampalataya” at “huwad”  naman ang sa iba.

Nakalimutan mo na pwedeng-pwede na sa iyong sarili ang pagpapasya. Desisyon na may pagkilala sa iyong interes, kapamilya, komunidad at kalikasan. Hindi ang IPAGTANGGOL ang interes ng iilan. Por diyos por santo! Matagal mo ng alam na ang mga pulitiko at partido ay pinakikilos lang ng kanilang interes na manatili sa kapangyarihan. Huwag ka magbulag-bulagan dahil kitang-kita mo na sila lang din ang may kontrol sa mga yaman. Hindi pa rin ba natatauhan? Ilang beses na bang nagpalit ng administrasyon, iba-ibang konsumisyon at iisa ang ating sitwasyon. GUTOM at MANGMANG pinaiikot sa palad ng mga may kapangyarihan. Aber mabibigyan mo ako ng pamamahala na naalis ang kahirapn, kagutuman, matinong serbisyong panlipunan? At sa karanasan wala ring matinong PULAHANG PAMAHALAAN, higit pa ang karahasan nito sa maraming bansa sa iba’-t-ibang paraan.

Ating balikan ang IDEYA AT PRAKTIKA NG BAYANIHAN — ang pagtutulungan sa ating mga pamayanan. Pagbibigy suporta na walang kapalit na pabor. Ito ang relasyon na may pagkilala sa ating limitasyon at pagkilala sa kolektibong aksyon bilang mabisang  solusyon sa ating mga problemadong sitwasyon.

Alam mo ba na ang pagyakap sa partido at mga grupo na ang layon ay maging boss, sentro at nagsasabi na siya lang ang tanging totoo ay likas na peligroso? Ang nais nito ay gawing iisa ang ating paniniwala at panlasa.  Walang itong pagkilala sa likas nating pagkakaiba-iba. Kahit anong gawin mo, malawak ang pagkakaiba-iba ng mga komunidad sa arkipelago. Dapat nating kilalanin ang samut-saring kultura na umiiral sa maraming lugar hindi lang dito maging sa buong mundo.

ANG MGA PULITIKO KABILANG ANG MGA PASISTA ay kumikilos upang panatilihin ang kamangmangan natin ng sa gayon tayo ay patuloy na aasa sa kanila at habang tayo naman ay tuloy din sa pagsuporta sa kanila. SILA AY LUMILIKHA NG DINGDING SA PAGITAN NATIN. Ang dingding na ito ay nagsisilbing harang upang hindi natin makita ang katotohanan na habang may iilang may kontrol ng kapangyarihan at yaman ay mananatili ang kahirapan ng karamihan at pagiging marhinalasado ng malawak na bilang ng mga pamayanan.

Amerikalı anarşist Rakka’nın IŞİD’den özgürleştirilmesi sırasında öldürüldü

Rojava’daki anarşist gerilla birimi IRPGF (Uluslararası Halkın Gerilla Güçleri), DAIS’e karşı Rojava konfederalist devrim için savaşan ABD’li anarşist Heval Demhat’ın Rakka’nın DAIS cetelerin’den temizlenmesi sırasında öldürüldüğünü duyurdu.

Heval Demhat, 2014’teki Kobane işgali bitisinde  YPG saflarina  katılmıştı.

Der Tyrannenmord ist ein sehr alter Vorschlag, gutgeheissen von etlichen respektablen Philosophen. Dass Erdogan ein Tyrann ist, steht wohl ausser Frage. Er hat einen Führerkult um sich aufgebaut, versucht alle Fäden in seinen Händen zusammenkommen zu lassen und unterdrückt jegliche politische Kraft, die ihm nicht passt.

Dass viele den Tod dieses Tyrannen wünschen, steht ausser Frage. Wieviele Augen würden aufleuchten, bei der Nachricht seines Todes? Und man muss zugeben, dass uns Anarchisten die Idee des Tyrannenmords nur symphatisch sein kann. Sollten wir aber als Anarchisten all unsere Anstrengung darin setzen, einen Tyrannen zu töten? Einen Diktator, der nicht ganz so auswechselbar ist wie es vielfach die demokratischen Präsidenten sind…

Es gab einige Anarchisten, die versucht haben, einen der grossen europäischen Diktatoren des 20. Jahrhunderts zu töten. Auf Mussolini, Hitler, Franco und Lenin gab es erfolglose Attentatspläne von Anarchisten. Wer weiss was geschehen wäre, wären die Pläne von Erfolg gekrönt gewesen…?

Doch der Tyrannenmord ist keineswegs eine Spezialität der Anarchisten, nichts wäre falscher als das. Zum klassischen Tyrannenmord griffen schon etliche verschiedene Parteien der Geschichte, zumeist um einem anderen Regime den Weg zu bereiten. Viele Republikaner waren Anhänger des Tyrannenmords, und dies ist auch logisch konsequent, wollen sie doch, dass der Staat von gewählten Repräsentanten geführt werde.

Ein heroisches Beispiel sind etwa die Russischen “Nihilisten” (Narodniki), die über Jahre hinweg versuchten, den russischen Zaren zu töten. Ihre Ideen waren grossteils demokratisch-republikanisch, und sie hofften, mit dem Tod des Zaren einer Volksregierung den Weg zu bereiten oder zumindest den Zarenmythos zu zerstören. Sie waren, das muss gesagt werden, keine Anarchisten. Als die Ermordung des Zaren, nach etlichen, opferreichen Versuchen, schliesslich erfolgreich war, ginge eine Welle der Freude durch die Welt. Doch die erwartete Revolution liess auf sich warten. Die Bauern verstanden es nicht, ja, betrachteten den Zaren vielfach sogar als ihren Freund…

Vor dem Hintergrund dieser Erfahrungen überlegten sich die russischen Anarchisten ihre Konzepte. Sie sagten, dass der “politische Terror” (wie z.B. die Ermordung des Zaren) vor allem für die Bourgeoisie interessant sei, während die grosse Masse skeptisch abseits steht, ohne dass sich ihre Lage gross verändert. Sie propagierten demgegenüber den “ökonomischen und sozialen Terror”, das heisst: den Angriff auf die aufkommende Bourgeoisie wie den Adel insgesamt. Sabotage und Zerstörung in den Fabriken, Angriffe auf die Infrastruktur, etc. Dort wo es den Reichen ökonomisch wehtut. Und sozial hiess: Angriff auf Leib und Leben der sozialen Tyrannen, die Unternehmer, Kapitalisten, Grossgrundbesitzer, Kirche, Polizei etc. Diese Entscheidung, das politische Feld zu verlassen, und ins ökonomische und soziale Gebiet vorzustossen, schien den Anarchisten nur logisch. Ist es doch das soziale und ökonomische Gebiet, indem der Staat seine Wurzeln schlägt, und nur wenn man diesen dort entwurzelt, die Wurzeln abhackt, fällt der ganze baum und nicht nur die Krone…

In der russischen Revolution von 1905 wurde dieses Konzept des “sozialen und ökonomischen Terrors” [nur um’s zu sagen: das Wort Terror wäre nicht meine Wahl] von einer grossen und lebendigen anarchistischen Bewegung (die übrigens nur im Geheimen agieren konnte) breit angewandt, und verbreitete sich unter den Bauern und Arbeitern rasant. Das Konzept hatte das Potential, dem Staat jeglichen Grund und Boden zu entziehen, der nun von der (nun nicht mehr) armen Bauern- und Arbeiterbevölkerung frei benutzt werden konnte. Die russische Revolution von 1905 wurde bald niedergeschlagen, aber man wird den Einfluss der aufständischen Experimente der Anarchisten 12 Jahre später nicht verleugnen können, als die Revolution nun nicht mehr vom alten Staat gemeuchelt wurde, sondern von den Bolschewisten…

Ich wurde gefragt, einen Kommentar zu den Möglichkeiten für Anarchisten in der gegenwärtigen Situation in der Türkei zu schreiben. Diese Situation ist mir nur vom Hörensagen bekannt, weshalb ich hier auch lieber historische Beispiele vorbringe, die mir in den Sinn kamen, als ich mit Gefährten über gewisse Gedankengänge sprach. Die Gefährten erzählten mir von der allgemeinen Perspektivenlosigkeit angesichts des neulichen Putsches von Erdogan, und das viele Gefährten glaubten, nichts mehr tun zu können, als auf das kleinere Übel zu hoffen. Vor allem angesichts der Tatsache, dass die Anarchisten nur eine kleine Minderheit stellen. Hier kam die Sprache auf die Frage des Tyrannenmords, die, wenn man denkt, das wirklich soviel an dieser Einzelnen Person liegt, doch eigentlich naheliegend sein sollte. Ob nun an Erdogan so viel liegt oder nicht, darüber wage ich nicht zu entscheiden.

Was mir aber am Herzen liegt, ist darauf hinzuweisen, dass der politische Wechsel allein für Anarchisten nicht zufriedenstellend sein kann. Als Feinde jeglicher Herrschaft sollte es uns vielmehr daran gelegen sein, wie wir mit unserer Aktivität den revolutionären Prozess anstossen, beschleunigen und vertiefen können. Wie wir jeglicher Herrschaft die Wurzeln abhacken können. Das bedeutet vor allem, auch in den schlimmsten Episoden noch zu versuchen die eigenen Ideen hochzuhalten. Auch in den Situationen, in denen uns alle vorwerfen nicht für das kleinere Übel zu sein. Als Anarchisten kann unsere Perspektive nicht die Politik sein. Wir können uns auf die Seite keiner Bourgeoisie stellen, sei sie auch links, kurdisch oder fortschrittlich. Wir haben keine Macht zu erhalten.

Der anarchistische Kampf kann nur sozial sein. Die Entfaltung einer breiten Agitation, die Propagierung und Verbreitung von reproduzierbaren Sabotageakten und Angriffen kann, so denke ich, auch unter dem repressivsten Regime seine Effekte kreieren. Der Versuch, lokale Kämpfe anzustossen, die sich nicht um politische Fragen drehen, sondern um soziale Fragen, scheint mir überall wertvoll zu sein – und in der Türkei, soweit ich von der Situation höre, auch einiges an Potential zu haben. Zumindest ist es das, was ich in meinem Kontext umzusetzen versuche. A biography of Polish-born anarchist Leah Feldman, nicknamed the “Makhnovist Granny” who tirelessly devoted her life for the cause of working class emancipation.

Leah Feldman, who was cremated in London on January 7th, 1994 was one of the ordinary men and women who rarely get into history books but have been the backbone of the anarchist movement.

Born in Warsaw in 1899, as a schoolgirl she became interested in anarchism. She said that her mother used to hide her shoes so that she could not attend meetings, which were then illegal in Poland. Finally she ran away to her sister in London where she earned her living at the sewing machine.

Working in the sweatshops of the East End she became active in the Yiddish-speaking anarchist movement that flourished at that time. When the Russian revolution broke out in 1917 the overwhelming majority of Russian male Jewish anarchists returned home. Many of those women whose husbands and lovers died at the hands of the Tsarists or the Bolsheviks, remained in England. The Jewish (in the sense of neither racial or religious but Yiddish-speaking) anarchist movement gradually dwindled and ended with Leah’s death in January.

Leah, however, had made her own way to Russia. Upon arrival she saw the reality of Bolshevik rule and was not impressed. As a working woman she could see the effects of their dictatorship in a way that visiting intellectuals could not. Before leaving Moscow she attended Kropotkin’s funeral, the last permitted anarchist demonstration until the collapse of Stalinism. (In a great display of self-discipline all of the anarchist political prisoners who were paroled for the funeral returned to jail, in the hope that the Bolsheviks would give parole to others in the future).

Leah travelled south to the Ukraine and joined the anarchist Revolutionary Insurrectionary Army led by Nestor Makhno. The Ukranian anarchists fought Tsarism, foreign intervention and then the Bolshevik dictatorship. Though she did not actually fight (some women who could ride horseback did) she joined the train that followed the army and prepared clothes and food for the orphans and strays they picked up everywhere.

When they were defeated in 1921 she got out of the country by changing her nationality through a marriage of convenience to a German anarchist. They did not meet again. She made her way to Paris and then back to London. There she acquired British citizenship by another marriage of convenience, this time to a derelict ex-serviceman who was paid £10 for his services. They did not see each other until many years later Leah received an official communication that he was in a geriatric hospital. She used to visit him with presents of tabacco.

Before World War II she travelled to Poland and Palestine, working her way to both places. In Palestine she organised a federation of anarchists. One surprise was meeting her old friend Paula Green, who had been pressurised into marriage in Russia, so had chosen an atheist zionist with whom she was in love. Paula knew he was active in Labour politics but thought it impossible that he would ever be in government as he thought her ideas impossible.

Green changed his name to Ben Gurion and became the first prime minister of Israel. His wife did not leave him but she never once took part in any public functions with him. She remained a still believing, if passive, anarchist.

When Leah returned to London at the end of 1935 she helped raise money for the German sailors who organised an anti-nazi resistance group in the 1930s. She also did tremendous work for the Spanish anarchist movement when the civil war broke out.

Leah was a member of a working group of immigrant anarchist women in Holborn ever since 1939. How, with the confusion of tongues – broken English, Yiddish, Polish, French, Catalan, Spanish, Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot – they understood each other was a mystery to many. But they managed.

Leah had to give up work when her eyesight went after an operation. She was completely blind in one eye thereafter and increasingly so in the other. She used her free time to help the movement she had given her life to. In the 1960s she smuggled arms into Spain for the fighters who had continued resisting the Franco regime since 1939. The Catalans, who are prone to giving nicknames, christened her “la yaya Makhnowista” (the Makhnovist granny).

Her last years were sad. Not only were all her family and her early friends dead, there was nobody left with whom she could talk in her own language. But she never gave up. She still supported anarchist meetings and always attended the annual London Anarchist Bookfair when her health permitted.

Our movement has been built by working women and men like Leah. It is right that we do not forget their contribution.
